These months, I have been part of the marketing team for a fabulous project: Greenlight Festival 2013. Every Wednesday afternoon, we have got together to build this day-long event, dedicated to sustainable living and doing our best to keep this city afloat. Now that we are extremely close to the date, I would like to talk to you about it.

Greenlight Festival 2013, supported by Prescient Power

This 2013, Greenlight Festival is ready to spring out for the third year in a row. Like in previous occasions, it will take over Queens Building at De Montfort University and is scheduled for the 16th of March from 11 am to 6 pm.

This edition will be dedicated to three main topics: skill-sharing, sustainable crafts and fashion, and sustainable community. With activities such as workshops, discussions and performances, we aim to create conscience, share ideas to improve the community, and encourage sustainable living.

At our wide selection of workshops and discussion groups, you will be able to try anything from meditation to circus skills, from creative writing to home improvement. We will also be launching the Leicester Skill Sharing Project, where you will have the opportunity to trade skills with people from different backgrounds.

Vegetarian food, available from a range of local caterers, will prove that you can live a sustainable life without sacrificing your tastebuds. Stalls all over the place will offer crafts, information, accessories, and drop-in workshops to let your creativity unravel. All of this, with musical acts and various performances going on through the day.

One of the highlights of the afternoon will be Re:Style Fashion Show, a catwalk featuring some of the most vibrant creations and findings in fashion, from up-cycled items from charity shops to brand new designs based on reclaimed, recycled or sustainable materials or methods. Also, all day long, the art gallery will invite you to look at local works of art made with love and care, so you can vote for your favourite.

Another highlight will be a Leicester Friends of the Earth hosted debate about the Energy Bill and wider concerns related to energy issues, featuring speakers such as Jon Ashworth MP, Tina Holt from Green Fox Energy and Carl Benfield from Prescient Power. Other key sessions include Natural Health, Technology and Human Transport and Time to Talk, Time to Change.

This festival is co-organised by Transition Leicester and Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire, with the assistance of De Montfort University students and diverse members of the local community.
